What are tooth fillings made of?

Dental fillings in Brisbane can be made from numerous materials. The most historically common is dental amalgam, a mixture of metals. However, modern dentists also use composite resins to achieve a white tooth filling.

At Edward St Dental, we use tooth-coloured fillings because patients prefer how seamlessly they blend into teeth without the dark appearance of dental amalgam.

How Are Composite Tooth-Fillings Better?

Composite is a common term that means a blend of different materials. Resins are a class of polymers with various characteristics but are noted because they are light and durable. So a tooth filling is a blend of durable polymers that can also be tinted to any colour shade, creating a dental restoration that looks more natural.

Other advantages of tooth-coloured fillings in Brisbane compared to dental amalgam are:

  • Flexibility – Composite fillings are mailable, so they fit into your cavity more efficiently. This conserves a more natural tooth structure to which the resins bond better.
  • Stability – Metal amalgam expand and contract with temperature changes, which may eventually fracture the filled toot
  • Appearance – Not only can composite fillings be colour-matched to your unique tooth shade, but they also remain invisible even as tooth enamel wears. Dental amalgam, by contrast, darkens the look of a filled tooth because the metal becomes more and more visible as enamel thins.
