Why is flossing so important?

Even if you aren’t showing any signs of gum disease, it’s essential to floss at least once a day. In fact, flossing your teeth removes the plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t reach and can benefit your long-term oral and overall health.

Oral Health Issues Flossing Can Prevent

Daily flossing removes the plaque and tartar buildup from between your teeth and along your gumline, helping prevent the following issues:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Bad breath
  • Bone loss

Proper Flossing Technique

When you floss your teeth, proper technique can make all the difference.

Follow these steps to ensure success:

  1. First, cut off a piece of floss between 12 and 18 inches long.
  2. Hold it securely by wrapping it around your middle fingers.
  3. Hold it tightly with your thumb and index fingers.
  4. Glide the floss between each tooth, moving it back and forth and using a C-shape against each tooth.
  5. When you’re finished, dispose of the floss.
